Geographically, Daviess County is located in southwestern Indiana and is bordered by Martin, Greene, Pike, and Knox counties. There are seven incorporated areas within Daviess County, one of which having an excess of more than 10,000 persons. Washington is the county seat and the largest community with a population of 11,380.
The community of Daviess County has always been strong, focusing on agriculture and manufacturing to prosper. Both of these industries have been a dominant force in the economy of the county. Agricultural profits have improved because of the Perdue turkey farms and the Grain Processing Corporation, both located in Washington. In addition, coal mining is also important to the county and to the state. According to the Indiana Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy, Daviess County produces 15% of all surface coal in Indiana.
As mentioned in other county summaries, Daviess County also has a strong community infrastructure. Factors such as transportation, educational resources, medical services, criminal justice system, and recreational facilities all promote what a great area this really is. Currently, Daviess County has a favorable transportation system, utilizing both state and federal highways and the railroad system. As far as educational resources are concerned, Daviess County has three public school corporations: Barr-Reeve, North Daviess, and Washington Community Schools. Also, the county is only 24 miles from Vincennes University, a two year junior college that offers many degrees and technical programs.
Daviess County also takes pride in the medical and criminal justice areas. Daviess Community Hospital, located in Washington, has recently been remodeled to better fit the needs of their patients. The hospital operates with state-of-the-art equipment and hires the best-trained professionals to ensure your loved ones are properly cared for. In addition, the Daviess County Security Center recently completed a major reconstruction project in order to fit the growing needs of the county. The new security center includes a 220 bed jail facility and work release center.
As mentioned earlier, there are many recreational parks among other places for the whole family to enjoy. This long list of facilities includes: the Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area, West Boggs Park and Lake, the Daviess County Historical Museum, the Amish Gasthof Restaurant and Gift Shoppes, and Country Oaks Golf Course. One can hunt, fish, water ski, golf, swim, boat, shop, or even take a tour on an Amish farm. Along with these facilities, Daviess County also holds several events for the community and visitors alike to participate or to simply observe. Events such as the Turkey Trot, the Old Settler’s Fair, or perhaps even the 20th Century Chevy Car Fest are enjoyed by many every year. Daviess County is and always will be a special place where people can come and enjoy a special little community that isn’t too far away from home.
