to visit, but maybe too far away. It’s right here in our backyard: Greene County. Greene County, located in southwestern
Indiana, has much to offer its community and visitors. This overview will
provide you with a more sufficient data regarding the economics, development,
and other facets of the county.
As mentioned above, Greene County is located in southwestern Indiana, bordered by 8 other counties. Greene County is predominantly rural; however, there are seven incorporated areas within the county. The two most populated include the county seat of Bloomfield with a population of 2,542, and also Linton, with a population of 5,774. These populations, along with the remainder of the county, have increased by 14% according to the United States Census Bureau. This growth of population has consequentially increased a need for more housing. The 2000 Census concludes that housing in Greene County has a total of 15,053 housing units compared to 13,337 housing units in 1990, which is an increase of 12.9%.
Because of this steadily increasing population, Greene County also focuses its attention on the community infrastructure. This consists of transportation, educational resources, recreational facilities, etc. These various elements of Greene County’s economy are vital and important to its survival.
A major factor relating to the economic well-being of the county is its transportation system. In order for existing businesses and future industries to flourish, a transportation system is key. This system includes highways, both federal and state, air service, waterways, and railroads. The State of Indiana has currently proposed an appropriate route for the extension of Interstate 69, running from Evansville to Indianapolis. The proposed route will possibly include a southeastern portion of Greene County, which can have a major effect on the area and its development.
Quality educational resources are also important to Greene County, as it provides a foundation for a more skilled labor force. Greene County has five public school corporations, all of which provide a valuable education. In addition, the County also has a wide variety of post-secondary education resources within driving distance including Vincennes University. Vincennes University is a two-year junior college that provides a wide assortment of degrees and technical programs. Other colleges and technical schools in the nearby area include Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana University in Bloomington, Purdue University in West Lafayette, among others.
Recreational facilities provide places for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the geography of Greene County. There are many places to fish, hike, or just enjoy the scenery including Greene Sullivan State Forest and Shakamak State Park. These facilities bring tourists to the area which can help boost the economy. Organizations such as the Linton Chamber of Commerce have made great strides in developing tourism potential.
Because of its strong sense of community, good scholastic resources, and recreational facilities, Greene County will continue to grow. This process may require time and energy from all its residents, but it positively looks toward the future.
