County, known for its historical landmarks, is located right on the
Wabash
River in southwestern
Indiana. One can fish or boat in the various waterways in Knox County, or one
could visit the many historical locations such as the Ebner-Free House,
Grouseland, and the Fort Knox site. Between 1800-1812, Grouseland was the home
of William Henry Harrison, our 9th President of the United States.
Vincennes is also the home of the George Rogers Clark Memorial; this memorial is
dedicated to Lieutenant George Rogers Clark, who led soldiers to victory in a
battle during the American Revolution. As you can see, Knox County is certainly
an appealing place for visitors.
But what does Knox County have to offer its community? We believe the answer is very clear. With a strong community infrastructure including items such as transportation, educational resources, medical services, the Knox County area is undoubtedly a good place to live. Hopefully this overview will give a more in-depth look at what Knox County has to offer.
One of the most important factors regarding economic development in Knox County is their educational resources. Vincennes is home to Vincennes University, a public two-year junior college. Vincennes University offers a variety of associate’s degrees and technical programs to study. The University tailors programs to meet the specific needs of industry in the district. This includes initial training and the retraining of workers. In addition, Knox County has three public school corporations and one parochial school corporation. All of these schools provide a valuable education for the youth of Knox County.
Not only does education matter to the citizens of Knox County, but transportation is also important. It has been said that one cannot drive through Vincennes throughout the day without being stopped by a train, which is very true! Railroads have always played a vital role both in terms of income and in the movement of goods through the county. There are two rail lines that serve Knox County. These include the CSX which runs in the western portion of the county, as well as the Conrail. The CSX Railroad system that runs through Vincennes serves numerous cities like Nashville, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. Another essential part of transportation is the highway system. A network of two federal and eight state highways serve Knox County, including U.S. 41 and U.S. 50. These two federal highways are beneficial because they span in every direction, which makes transportation more feasible.
Another important factor in the community infrastructure is medical services. The Good Samaritan Hospital, located in Vincennes, is one of the area’s best hospitals. It opened in 1908 as a 25 bed facility and has now grown to over 260 beds, serving southwestern Indiana and southeastern Illinois. Good Samaritan offers a variety of services with a staff of hard-working individuals willing to serve.
The various parts of Knox County’s community infrastructure have helped it survive. This county is not only a place for its strong community but also for its visitors. Knox County has attracted many tourists through their visitor’s bureau, which offer tours of the Vincennes historical district and the George Rogers Clark Memorial. Through its rich history and traditional values, Knox County will continue to be a wonderful place to live (or visit) in the years to come.
